The Reading tool gives you a realistic estimate of how long it will take to finish a book, based on its word count. The median book in this catalog is about 68,000 words, which translates to roughly 298 minutes of reading.
Estimates assume an average reading speed of about 230 words per minute. Your actual time may vary depending on your pace and the difficulty of the text.

Reading Tracker is designed for the long haul. It records progress in pages, not sections or minutes, because a page is a consistent unit you can control. You set a daily page goal, and the tracker estimates when you will finish based on that goal. The default is 20 pages per day, but you can adjust it to fit your schedule.
The tracker works with any edition. If the catalog's page estimate does not match your physical book, you can replace the total page count with the number from your own reading app or edition. The estimate is based on 250 words per page, but your edition may differ. The tracker adapts to that.
Consider 'An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals — Themes and Context' (id 226). It has 51,560 words, which at 250 words per page gives an estimated 207 pages. The estimated reading time is 225 minutes, or about 3.75 hours. If you set a daily goal of 20 pages, you would finish in about 11 days. If you increase the goal to 30 pages, you would finish in 7 days. The tracker makes these trade-offs explicit.
The daily page goal is the lever you control. A smaller goal is easier to maintain, but it stretches the finish date. A larger goal shortens the reading period but requires more time each day. The tracker does not tell you which is right; it shows you the consequences.
The estimated remaining time is proportional: if you have read half the pages, you have roughly half the estimated minutes left. This is a simple calculation, but it helps you see For readers who are on track. The tracker also stores your history in the browser, so you can look back at your progress over time.
The catalog's page estimate is a starting point, not a fixed number. If your edition has a different page count, you can enter the total from your own reading app or printed book. This is important because page counts vary widely between editions. A 200-page paperback and a 250-page hardcover of the same text will have different page counts, and the tracker should reflect the one you are actually reading.
The daily goal of 20 pages is a default, but it is not mandatory. Some readers prefer a lower goal to keep the habit sustainable; others aim higher to finish sooner. The tracker does not judge your choice; it simply calculates the finish date based on your input.
If you fall behind, you can adjust the goal or the total pages. The tracker is a planning tool, not a scorekeeper. It is there to help you turn a large philosophical work into a manageable daily practice.
