How to Get Started with Excel Budget Templates

Okay, so you’ve downloaded your chosen budget spreadsheet. Congrats!
🎉
That’s the first step.

Not sure where to go from here? No worries, here are some steps to get you started using the Excel budget template.

Step 1: Download an Excel Budget Template

Step 2: Define Some Financial Goals

Consider your monthly, yearly, and long-term financial goals and include them in your budget spreadsheet. Don’t skip this step! Dreaming about the great things you want your money to do for you—that luxury vacation, that new home with the bigger yard, or that retirement plan—can help motivate you to get through the rest of the budgeting work.

Tip: When goal planning, try to set SMART goals. Not familiar with the concept? Check out this printable SMART goals template.

Step 3: Document Monthly Income
Add your income to the Excel budget template.

Step 4: List Expenses
You should start this on a separate spreadsheet or a piece of paper because once you have a list of all of your expenses, it may be helpful to group them into categories. (See step 5.)

Tip: Review your bank and credit card statements to ensure you don’t overlook anything.

Step 5: Group Expenses
Move your expenses to your Excel budget template, grouping them in a way that makes sense. For example, I group all of my utilities.

Step 6: Compare Income and Expenses
Review your budget spreadsheet to ensure your expenses don’t outweigh your income.

Tip: If you have extra income, document where it should go, such as to savings or debt repayment.

Budgeting Tips

Whether you’re using one of Excel budget templates or some other type of budget spreadsheet or printable, here are some helpful tips and tricks.

Budget to zero.
This doesn’t mean that you spend every penny you earn. Instead, you make sure each dollar is allocated to something, even if it’s just your savings account. When money isn’t earmarked explicitly for anything, it’s easier to spend it frivolously.

Don’t be unrealistic.
If you make your budget too restrictive, with no room to buy anything you enjoy, you’ll find it much, much harder to stick to!

Know your why.
Understanding what you’re saving for, especially if it’s something you’re excited about, can make it easier to give up other things. Plan your financial goals in detail.

Check in with yourself.
Review your budget spreadsheet regularly to see if you’re on track and making progress. If things aren’t working, don’t be afraid to make adjustments!

Check your social calendar.
Review upcoming events and holidays and make room in your budget well in advance. Here is a budget spreadsheet that can help you plan out your Christmas/holiday shopping:

Try different tools.
Maybe an Excel budget template is a dream fit for you, but if not, don’t sweat it. Keep experimenting with different options and learning about different resources. I’ll share some of my other fav budget spreadsheets and printables below!
